Science Comics: Plagues: The Microscopic Battlefield

From School Library Journal

Gr 4–8—With bold and colorful graphics, Koch tackles the complex world of germs and the human body's incredible immune system, which is designed to combat them. In this title that's reminiscent of the "Magic School Bus" series, scientist Elena uses a futuristic interactive technology that enables her to verbally communicate with viruses, bacteria, and leukocytes. Elena is able to simulate situations involving pathogens and the human body to explain to readers how the two interact as well as call forth various historically significant incidents involving disease (such as the Philadelphia yellow fever epidemic of 1793). Readers learn about the different types of germs (protozoa, fungi, bacteria, and viruses), the role of vectors in the spread of disease, and how leukocytes (white blood cells) fight germs. Initially the narrative is somewhat confusing to follow. However, it soon becomes clear that Elena's goal is to convince a yellow fever virus and a bubonic plague bacteria (both anthropomorphized) to join forces with scientists to create vaccines and potentially combat other deadly germs. VERDICT This useful introduction to the topic of disease and immunity is recommended for graphic novel enthusiasts or as a companion text in science classes.—Ragan O'Malley, Saint Ann's School, Brooklyn

My girl loves science comics and I got her every one book in the series. She was not that into this book the first time she read it. She said it was scary. However I noticed she learned a lot about the blood cells and vaccination from this book. Together with her favorite Human Body Theater, they gave her a very clear picture of how your body works and how it fights off enemies. They are written in a humorous and easy way for these young minds, and I love them.

This one stands out to me as one of the best, as we had a ton of conversations about it. These books are all great, though, my kiddos love them. Ive got a pre-order in for the brain/mind one :)

Interesting and educational graphic novel. Daughter is learning and having fun at the same time!

My kids love science and they loved this book. It’s very humorous and a quick read. After the kids finished this book they asked for another one. The illustrations are funny and add great visuals to the educational Information that it provides .

I liked this book because I learned a lot about different plagues. My favorite ones are smallpox, cholera, and bubonic plague.

Informative and super fun book. Our son (9) loved it and was able to identify causes of death at the Mutter museum :)!

My son absolutely loves these series. They are fun for him and very educational.

We love Science Comics! Educational and fun to read!
