About the Author
Often referred to as the “Bard of the Yukon,” Robert Service was a prolific novelist and poet, publishing numerous poetry collections, two autobiographies, and six novels during his lifetime. Though he was born in England, he is best known for his writings set in Northwest Canada featuring the Klondike Gold Rush. Service died in 1958, and has since been honored on a Canadian Postage Stamp and has had various schools in Canada named after him.

I grew up seeing this book on my parents book shelf and recently inherited this little treasure. This isn’t the kind of book that I read in a few days--it is 735 pages of poetry after all. I have been working on it for over a year, a few poems at a time. This collection includes six books: The Spell of the Yukon; Ballads of a Cheechako; Rhymes of a Rolling Stone; Rhymes of a Red Cross Man; Ballads of a Bohemian; and Bar-Room Ballads. Service’s best known poems--"The Shooting of Dan Mc Grew" and "The Cremation of Sam Mc Gee"--are included, of course. But my favorites are in Ballads of a Bohemian written just before and during World War I. In this collection, he discourses briefly on the person or experience in his life that prompted him to write each poem. He also disavows being a poet and claims to just write rhymes. True, his rhymes are simple but they portray honest humor, pathos and spirituality in clear and straightforward language.
If you've not ever read the works of Robert Service you are missing out. Although language has changed some in modern times - the views and the message of this poet are as sharp and clear today as when they were written.
Many favorites in this extensive volume. Reading about characters like Claw Fingered Kitty, Dangerous Dan MacGrew, and Blasphemous Bill MacKie...Bob Service is a master of word choice. He is a poet for the common man. Read about the Baldness of Chewed Ear Jenkins or Bessie's Boil. Humor and sincerity all wrapped up in a single volume. You can tell Robert Service loved the North. A fine volume.

Everything I expected, this complete collection of Robert Service's poems captures the spirit of the rugged lives of those who struggle against the harshness of the cold and frozen Yukon and other points north. After a recent trip to Alaska where every Bed and Breakfast had a copy, I couldn't wait to get back and order my own. My childhood memory of the "Cremation of Sam McGee" only added to my delight of the book. The only drawback you know before you order, it is all one author. Therefore, the style is much the same from poem to poem. However, to me, that just made the rhythm of his words more of a song in my head and I found that delightful. I think you will too.
Much larger and thorough that I expected. Was very pleased with this purchase.
Robert Service spent time in WW I and in the Yukon. His poetry reflects his life experiences in both and will make you laugh and cry. His style is descriptive of the subject with a special way of drawing pictures with his poems. It is better read after experiencing the wilds of Alaska however will still be enjoyable to see through the poet's eyes
Robert Service is awesome! My recommendation is to take this book with you camping or hiking (it's a little heavy for hiking though but you can try), find a nice place to sit down where you feel surrounded by nature, up on a mountain, next to a river, or under the stars in a meadow, and read a story out loud to your friends, family, or just to yourself. You'll be transported to a place where nature is raw, unforgiving, and beautiful (even if you are less than a day away from the nearest McDonalds).
